Discovering Multi-Region Origins and Ancient Ties: A Personal Journey through the iGENEA DNA Test

Family name Lau

The iGENEA DNA test has transformed my perception of my family identity and my understanding of our surname, Lau. It has unveiled the multi-region origins of our surname, introduced diversity into our previously singular Asian heritage, and uncovered links to ancient human populations. This has spurred further research and instilled a renewed sense of connection with the broader spectrum of human history.

Having the opportunity to undergo an iGENEA DNA test was an enlightening and significant personal experience for me. The results brought a new perspective on my understanding of the origins of my family name, Lau, and added another layer of depth to my sense of familial identity and heritage.

DNA testing opened the door to a rich history steeped in variation and geographical diversity that I hadn't previously been acquainted with. Being of Chinese descent, I had always associated the Lau surname with my Asian heritage, considering it as a monolithic identity mostly related to the Han Chinese people. However, the iGENEA results revealed that there are multiple origins of the surname Lau among diverse ethnic groups across different regions in Europe and Asia.

This newfound discovery that our Lau family lineage doesn't trace exclusively to China, but also includes intertwinings with various groups such as Germanic and Scandinavian people, challenged my previous perceptions and assumptions. It emphasized the complexity of genetic heritage and human migration, underlining the fact that surnames, albeit powerful identity markers, are also part of intricate webs of cultural and genetic exchanges in human history.

The results also revealed a distinct branch of DNA shared amongst the Laus that can be traced back to ancient tribes. This DNA marker links our lineage directly to some of the oldest human populations, hinting at the likelihood of deep historical roots. Excitingly, it has fuelled a drive to investigate further, delving into archival research and family oral history.

Overall, the iGENEA DNA test has sparked a profound change in how I view my family name and identity. It has shifted from a singularly Asian lens of affiliation to a more dynamic, multi-ethnic understanding. This revelation has enhanced my sense of connectivity with humanity as a whole. I feel part of a much larger tapestry of human history while simultaneously appreciating the distinct threads that the Lau lineage brings to it.
