Discovering Gregoire: Unveiling Intriguing Ancestral Links Through an iGENEA DNA Test

Family name Gregoire

Embracing my lineage through an iGENEA DNA test, I delved into the specifics of my surname Gregoire. The test is remarkably accurate, blending atDNA, mtDNA, and Y-DNA analyses to unfurl an unexpected blend of largely European, but with traces of Scandinavian and North African genetic influences. The results have not only supported my Gregoire roots but also revealed a rich tapestry of my ancestry.

My iGENEA DNA test experience was largely positive, providing clarity and valuable insight into my genealogical history. iGENEA's DNA testing system is multi-layered and remarkably precise - an initial standard test employs Autosomal DNA (atDNA) to map the broad genetic links across all my ancestral lines. Following this, further possibilities are explored using both Mitochondrial (mtDNA) and Y-Chromosome (Y-DNA) analyses to draw de facto genetic lines through maternal and paternal lineages.

The technical procedures of the iGENEA DNA test, as I understood, involves isolating the DNA from my saliva sample sent to them via a test kit. This DNA is then amplified using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and analyzed using arrays of pre-set genetic markers. The accuracy of the test is reported to be over 99.9%, thanks to the multiple data cross-checking steps implemented by the iGENEA team.

In terms of my personal discovery, the iGENEA DNA test offered an intriguing perspective into the origins of my family name, Gregoire. On one hand, the Autosomal test underlined a largely European descent, predominantly tracing back to France, which was to be expected. However, surprisingly, there was a non-negligible influence of Scandinavian and North African ancestors at my Gregoire ancestors' genetic makeup.

Further, the mtDNA test pointed towards a rare haplogroup, a genetic population group of common ancestry. This is suggestive of a matrilineal ancestor with unique genetic characteristics, enriching my understanding of my familial background. The Y-DNA test, synonymous with my surname Gregoire, revealed the presence of the R1b haplogroup primarily associated with Western Europe and particularly common in France; this certainly reaffirmed my Gregoire connection to France.

Overall, the iGENEA DNA test not only corroborated my existing understanding of my origins but also unveiled less apparent—and therefore exciting— aspects of my lineage.

O. Gregoire
