Unlocking Ancestral Secrets: How a DNA Test Altered my Perception of the Jackson Lineage

Family name Jackson

In a quest to better understand the family history, a DNA test at iGENEA took place. The test unraveled certain surprising connections across different cultures and continents. This not only altered the perception of the Jackson lineage but also greatly influenced my understanding of my identity.

Ever since I delved into our family's historical past, Jackson has been an important name, prominent in our ancestry, carrying a legacy of strength, resilience, and creativity. The decision to undertake a DNA test at iGENEA was primarily to get a clearer perspective on our family lineage. I unearthed certain unexpected revelations that triggered a significant shift in my self-understanding.

The test threw light on our assumed European heritage. I was startled to discover that our roots leaned more towards eastern and northern Europe rather than the western regions from which our family lore had led me to believe we hailed. This discovery added a new layer of understanding regarding those early Jacksons - they were probably explorers, settlers, or possibly traders, engaging with a variety of cultures across Europe.

Furthermore, it was revealing to find hints of Ashkenazi Jewish lineage. That was unexpected, considering there were no recorded Jewish ancestors in the Jackson family line. A historically persecuted group, they may have adopted the name Jackson to camouflage their Jewish identity for fear of persecution. Unveiling this allowed me a unique glimpse into the survival instincts of my forebears.

Among the most surprising findings was traces of Native American DNA. Could it be possible that one of the early Jacksons crossed the Atlantic and mated with someone of Native American ancestry? The landscape of my familial heritage suddenly painted a picture of adventurous individuals who traveled extensively, fearlessly embracing new worlds and cultures.

Each insight gleaned from the DNA test has significantly altered my understanding of the Jackson lineage and, by extension, my self-perception. I now realize that my ancestors were not just typical settlers, but explorers, survivalists, and daring adventurers. When I say I am a Jackson now, it's with a profound understanding of the richness, diversity, and resilience imbued in that identity.
